Fun fact, in HS, though I was often stressed with the time crunch I put myself in, I never actually slept later than 11 PM. I think back to how I managed to race the 0.25 mile stretch from my house to the sidewalk in less than 2 minute time ( 6:43 AM) to catch the school bus. I’d like to think thats good exercise that I’m at least running 0.25 miles a day and walking 0.25 miles back with a 30000 lb backpack xP and clarinet box.
Now that I”m a working professional life, I’m finding that I probably need a little more than 2 minutes to get ready as a responsible adult in the morning but at least work doesn’t start until like anywhere between 8:00–8:30 AM. Hence, I made the responsible adult decision to stay up to play video games until 12:30 AM =D
Right before my masters graduation, my friend told me about this gaming platform called steam and this farming game called Stardew Valley. When I first saw the graphics, if i’m honest, I thought to myself why did I let myself be convinced to download this game if the graphics are so poor? I downloaded it anyway because of all the good reviews my friend had but also confirming good reviews online.
Thankfully I downloaded it after graduation because man I don’t think I would have gotten any homework done that last semester if I had downloaded it earlier.
Yesterday, it was really fun to meet online with said friend V. and C.
A few days before yesterday, V. and I had already played together b/c I managed to build the first cabin that could transform single player to multiplayer world. In order to bring in C., we needed one more cabin. We played through a few days in the summer and realized before we called it quits that night that we needed to build the 3rd cabin for C. Between the 2 of us we had to go back to the carpenters 3 times bc I think the first time we got lost and couldn’t find the carpenters and by the time we did she closed ( even though its literally the house next door) and then the 2nd time I messed up the raw materials so V. had to go back and bring back the right material. I’m just stopping here to try and picture myself being in a real game soaked from the pouring rain that day. After the 3rd try we did finally get the cabin though.
Then yesterday, we agreed to meet online at 9 PM to play. When V and I played, we used the chat feature in the game to communicate, which wasn’t the immediate response to stimuli. But this time, we did a voice thread so we could hear the other persons immediate response which was just hilarious. I just started picturing talking characters since its cute graphics.
At the beginning of last night, I had about 41k saved in my bank account. After C. hopped in, he was quick to transform the farm, starting with binge buying 50 pumpkin seeds at the local farmers market and asking me to make sprinklers — to accomodate all 50 pumpkins . At some point in the game, the farm got a ton of upgrades but the money got drained down to 18k. The first day we played through, I had just remembered to remind them not to cut down my fruit trees — but I got back to the farm and was about to explain when I noticed that my hard harvested apricot tree that I had been growing for a month was cut down. WHO CUT MY APRICOT TREE DOWN! Haha, Turns out C. went to town with cutting down trees to clear patches for plants. The good part about me discovering my tree was cut down early enough was that I just xd out of the game to start over the day. To his credit though at the end of the night at 12:30 we made it back up to about 39k and I still have 50 some pumpkins growing in the yard. i’m hopeful i’ll have a magic dress and a big coach ball to go to the castle with in a few more days. It was really fun to watch the psychology of how people play video games.
I can’t believe I found this funny enough to write about. Maybe this is just a silly rambling piece haha and when V reads this hm I wonder what her reaction will be like. This is the perks of quarantining. If theres one thing I learned I liked in quarantining, I like the concept of Stardew Valley where I can just fish and mine for gold all day long and not be a responsible adult and thrive off of soley berries =D
One week later after our first multiplayer session, V.,C. and myself are back in for round 2. Later in the night, my other friend N. calls me and we have a good conversation about where we are in life and how we are terrible at adulting. Somehow in the conversation of adulting, I mention Stardew Valley, and managed to convince her to download it too. Because I was too excited for her to join in, I reopened the session at about 11 PM when she finally downloaded it. Apparently Stardew kept giving her cut scenes, so I would have her follow me around the map but then it would keep teleporting her somewhere else to see a cut scene that Ive already seen before, so the first few days we played through, she would never make it into bed by 2 AM and her character would pass out. The first night that I actually made sure she tailed me right behind my character, she couldn’t figure out how to get her bed to bed, so her character just stood by the bed and still fell asleep. The last day we played because it was 12:30 AM again in real life, oops, I tried to teach her how to fish, but her character just struggled to fish and fished one fish for a really long time — not really sure if the game was glitching or not. But right before 1 AM in the game, after a long battle with the fish she caught it only to not know how to move and proceeded to drop it right back into the ocean. Heres to a better round 2 this weekend N.
